About us

The Open Access Writer's Conference is special because our panelists and presenters span not only the world of literature, but film and visual media as well. We treat storytelling as an art, fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for everyone; marginalized, disadvantaged, published, and aspiring writers.

Our founding story

The Open Access Writer's Conference was founded by a diverse group of individuals committed to building an engaged, supportive community. Our founders include Patricia Thompson, a publisher and leader in the arts community in the Catawba Valley; respected poet and retired professor Rand Brandes, who is now launching a new Center for Creative and Compassionate Communities; Todd Cimino, Emmy-award winning screenwriter and published novelist and founder of Akula Literary Partners; Aland Jackson, founder of Foot Candle Film Festival; and Twyla Deese, founding partner with the Catawba Valley Festival of the Arts and AnandaRasa Catawba.

Our key takeaway

If you could only attend the Open Access Writer's Conference once, the key takeaway we want you to have is success—in any dimension of your activities in the literary arts. We strive to provide an experience and a space that propels you forward in your writing journey.

Our core mission

Our core mission and philosophy that drives the Open Access Writer's Conference is simple: Open access to all! We believe everyone deserves access to the resources and community they need to thrive as writers.
